Ani DiFranco writes in her Foreword to renowned midwife Ina May Gaskin’s book Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta that, were she to give birth again, “I would invite more of an atmosphere of accompaniment and camaraderie around me. I would call upon confident women to put their arms around me and rock me and clap hands and growl and make me laugh down the fear.”

As a labor doula, I believe that my role is not to direct you, but to create an environment of the kind of camaraderie and support to which DiFranco refers, such that you can empower yourself to create the most positive birth story possible for you and your child. As your doula, my goal is to provide informed, compassionate care in our meetings as well as in the birth room (regardless of whether that is located in a hospital, birthing center, or your home). We will discuss in an unbiased fashion your birth plan, including preparation for labor and delivery. In addition to emotional support during your postpartum period, I can also provide information about lactation and breastfeeding, if desired.

In Birth Matters, Gaskin writes that “women’s perceptions about their bodies and their babies’ capabilities will be deeply influenced by the care that they receive around the time of birth.” I offer mothers of all backgrounds and creeds thoughtful, comprehensive support, so that you can put your strength and confidence where it matters most.

Services offered: a minimum of two prenatal visits, phone/text support, on-call 24/7 for the two weeks prior to and until your due date for continuous labor support, and at least one postpartum visit.
