Four years ago I helped a close friend prepare for the birth of her first child. Since then I’ve wanted to support women through pregnancy and birth but it wasn’t until the spring of 2011 when I took care of my mother as she underwent cancer treatment that I knew I would be strong enough to do it. Supporting and nurturing women and their partners during pregnancy and birth will be a new experience for me, but I will bring all that I have learned as a farmer, writer, teacher and traveler to my work as a doula.

As a doula, my philosophy has four main parts:

1. Birth is a sacred, transformative event for a woman and her family. It is my intention to honor and protect the event of birth.
2. I believe a woman who is given resources and information about birth options in her community will be more prepared to write a birth plan that accommodates her individual needs.
3. A woman who labors without fear and with the support of others is likely to experience less pain and lower incidence of medical interventions.
4. Every birth is unique and I will offer continuous, impartial support.
