Legend Drugs and Devices Program (LD&D)

Birthingway's Legend Drugs and Devices Program is designed for midwives and student midwives who wish to meet state licensing requirements for the first time and for those who plan to renew their license under the most current standards.

Legend drugs and devices are potentially lifesaving medications and equipment which require special authorization to access. Oregon Licensed Midwives have access to specific legend drugs and devices for professional use. Prior to licensure, a midwife must complete a training in the following required program components:

  • Suturing
  • Pharmacology for Midwives
  • Treatment of Shock including IV
  • Medications by Injection
  • Neonatal Resuscitation

These trainings must be taken from an approved LD&D education provider. For a full list of approved providers, please click here. When a midwife or student midwife has completed all requirements, an official transcript is sent directly from the College to the Licensing Board for their use in licensing or renewal.

Legend Drugs and Devices Initial Training

Birthingway College of Midwifery is an authorized provider of Legend Drugs and Devices education. At this time, Birthingway does not offer the LD&D initial training as a stand alone workshop. Rather, Birthingway offers the training as individual, for-credit classes. Please see the chart below and contact the college for more information.

Course Name Number of Credits Term the course is offered
Pharmacology/Medications by Injection 2 Winter
Suturing 2 Spring
Treatment of Shock including IV Skills and Neonatal Resuscitation (Critical Care Skills I) 2 Spring

Legend Drugs and Devices Renewal Training

Birthingway offers the LD&D renewal course twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. This workshop is for midwives who have already completed their initial training and are licensed. It updates the same topics in a shortened format, and includes a testing component. Neonatal resuscitation training is not part of the LD&D renewal workshop and needs to be taken separately. Please see our Biodynamic Resuscitation of the Newborn (BRN) page for more information.

The LD&D renewal workshop is a non-credit course which meets the LD&D education requirement for Oregon State licensure. It does not meet Birthingway graduation requirements for the certificate/degree program.

Please for up-coming workshop information and registration forms.

Legend Drugs and Devices Training for Birthingway Midwifery Program Students

Birthingway Midwifery Program students receive training in Legend Drugs and Devices as part of their regular Midwifery Program curriculum. Because of state mandated time-lines, it is not uncommon for students to need to retake some or all LD&D tests and skills demonstrations to apply for their license. Students who are close to completing the Midwifery Program, and are planning to license in the state of Oregon, need to talk to the Specialized Programs Coordinator for more information. For current Birthingway students and Birthingway graduates transcripts are sent upon request.
