Program Requirements

To become a Certified Birthingway Childbirth Educator students follow a three step process:

Childbirth Educator Workshop

The workshop can be taken as a stand alone class or as the first step toward certification. Throughout the nearly 40 hours of classroom time, there are many opportunities to:

Baby with Jam on Face

  • Learn the fundamentals of the biodynamic model of birth
  • Explore our own preconceptions about birth
  • Practice many forms of relaxation
  • Produce our own birth art
  • Brainstorm dozens of teaching tools and techniques
  • Tell stories and share food

Independent Work

This phase includes designing a syllabus for your own class, reviewing a birth video and several books, and creating a community resources binder.

Practicum Work/Student Teaching

Once the workshop and independent work is complete, you begin the practicum. To complete this step:

Fill out the Application for Childbirth Educator Practicum

This form includes information to be listed on Birthingway’s website as a Student Childbirth Educator. The website is one way that Birthingway tries to help students network with potential clients, during both the practicum period, and once a student has certified. The application fee should be turned in to the Specialized Programs Coordinator along with the application.

Connect with a mentor childbirth educator who supports you as you facilitate your first series of childbirth education classes
The Specialized Programs Coordinator will connect you with a mentor who will provide support and advise you during your practicum class. You will use the syllabus you designed during your coursework and schedule your own class. Birthingway will provide a listing on our website’s Student Childbirth Educator page, but cannot guarantee additional support in acquiring potential clients. The CBE Mentor will be responsible to attend and observe a minimum of 4 hours of the class over a minimum of 2 sessions. In addition, the CBE Mentor will meet with you for a minimum of one hour outside of the class to discuss strong points, style, technique, and potential changes. It will also be the mentor's responsibility to bring any concerns about students to the attention of Birthingway’s Specialized Programs Coordinator.

Complete the practicum paperwork
You are required to complete weekly journals, answering specific questions about your experiences teaching the provisional series. Your clients must also be asked to complete an evaluation at the end of the course and you will need submit all evaluations. The Specialized Programs Coordinator evaluates your written materials from the practicum portion of the program and determine whether certification will be granted or whether some remediation should take place.

Childbirth Educator Certification Process

Upon successful completion of the practicum, you can request certification by filling out the Childbirth Educator Certification Request form (available from the College) and turning in the documentation from your completed practicum. You must submit all evaluations and a certification fee payment along with the Certification Request form. This is then processed, and if all requirements have been met, a Childbirth Educator Certificate will be issued.

Childbirth Educator Certification is valid for 2 years. Re-certification requires documentation (self evaluation journals and parent evaluation forms) of one series of classes taught during the two year period as well as 10 hours of documented continuing education (pertinent classes, workshops, lectures, etc.) and a re-certification fee. Forms are available from the College upon request.

Childbirth Educator Program for College Credit

Students may choose to take the Childbirth Educator Program for two college credits. Students choosing this route will pay the current Birthingway credit price for two credits and will be required to complete additional work. If the student is enrolled in the midwifery program, the course may count as one of their required elective courses.

Students who are not taking the program for credit may take the workshop alone or choose to move forward toward certification, completing additional homework and a mentored teaching experience over the course of an additional 10 months. Students who are taking the workshop for credit MUST complete additional homework (see syllabus for the specific homework details), but may choose whether or not to certify by completing a mentored teaching experience. The additional homework must be completed before the end of the term in which they take the workshop. If they choose to certify, they will have an additional six months in which to complete their practicum.
